A follow-up to Huntingtower, in which a grown-up Jaikie and Dougal take a walking holiday in Galloway and stumble across a plot involving unsympathetic newspaper magnate Thomas Carlyle Craw, and a plot by republicans against the European monarchy of Evallonia. Jaikie comes into his own during the adventure, and falls in love with the spirited Alison Westwater along the way.  Dickson McCunn must impersonate another, and send Prince John safely on his way in a small boat.
